BetFair And PokerStars Receive Spanish Gambling Licenses
It seems the floodgates have been opened with regards to Spain’s online gambling market. Earlier this month, the local government handed out several of its first licenses to operators across Europe; now, it has been a constant barrage of licenses as dozens of online casino operators receive the right to offer their services to Spanish residents.
Betfair is one of the companies that has received a license this week. While most companies had received licenses allowing them to offer one type of activity, Betfair has received a sportsbook and casino license; so, the company can provide players in the country with a wide range of options.
PokerStars has also received a license to operate in the Spanish online gambling market. Spain is one of the largest markets for online poker players in the world, so PokerStars sees this as a huge opportunity to appeal to a new, untapped audience.
Both operators will be required to pay four years’ worth of back taxes to the Spanish government, but the details have not yet been released. Already, the market has raised £40 million in back taxes thus far.
