Ladbrokes suffered permanent discarding by the advertising watchdog for using an image of the newly signed Manchester United player Memphis Depay. Ladbrokes were permanently red carded for breaking the United Kingdom code on marketing to young people.

The United Kingdom advertising code states that it is illegal to promote gambling by using people who are under the age of 25. A person who also appears to be underage should not play a significant role in promoting gambling.

The Advertising Standards Authority stated that the advertisement would attain legal standards if it had appeared on the Ladbrokes Website. In such a case, if the advertisement had appeared on the Ladbrokes website, a bet could be considered placed directly through a transactional facility.

Featuring someone under the age of 25 in an advertisement is only allowed under two conditions. First of all, if the featured person is the specific subject of a bet. Secondly, if the displayed person is the particular topic on Ladbrokes website.

Ladbrokes used Memphis Depay image, an under aged Manchester United young star. Use of Depay’s image triggered the Advertising Standards Authority ruling that the advertisement breached the United Kingdom code. The United Kingdom code features all the policies that apply to the advertising sector.

Ladbrokes has featured as the fourth betting company being red carded by the Advertising Standards Authority. Bet 365, Coral and Totesport also received advertisement bans for using images of Jordan Spieth. These three gambling companies had used the 22-year-old United States Open Champion in Twitter campaigns to promote betting.

After Coral and Totesport hitting a triple bogey, Coral came out and explained that he was using Jordan Speith’s image to illustrate the odds available rather than promoting specific bonus offers. Bet 365, on the other hand, implied that their tweet reported on an important sporting event and, therefore, did not breach the code.

Totesport stated that Jordan was not a young man nor was he vulnerable. Totesport also said that the advertisement did not feature Speith gambling or engaging himself in annoying behavior.

Ladbrokes hired Fahy Kristof as their new Chief Marketing Officer. Kristof Fahy was held responsible for using the Manchester United young star to advertise betting. Kristof Fahy also worked in Telegraph Media Group, where he worked as the chief marketing officer for seven months.
