EU Wants New Rules to Fight Match-Fixing
In the European Union, match-fixing is become a big problem. It is no longer restricted to smaller leagues in which betting scandals go unnoticed. It has transgressed into larger leagues, affecting the Premiership and even the Olympics. Now, the EU is finally fed up and will take measures towards fighting match-fixing across member states.
It has been suggested that the European Union will ban certain types of wagers in order to help prevent match-fixing. Wagers on penalty kicks are likely to be the first to go, as many betting scandals have resulted from these types of bets.
The International Olympics Committee also seems to be setting a good example for the European Union. The IOC is working hard to prevent match-fixing from taking place in the London 2012 Olympics and its strategy may be effective for the European Union as well.
It consists of sophisticated and comprehensive monitoring systems. Operators keep a close eye on betting activity and are obligated to report anything that seems suspicious. They also have the right to suspend bets if anything seems fishy. This could certainly benefit the European Union, helping it to fight match-fixing crimes.
