Government Response to Serve Gamblers
Gambling is one of the oldest trade in the world. As we will learn from the various historical books even religious books like the Bible, gambling is an old world practice which if not properly checked can cause addiction. The addiction that gamblers experience is like to that of crack cocaine. A gambler can use all their money with disregard for any use in future. A gambling problem is serious especially with the money bookmakers getting opened in every corner of the street. As a result, it’s become evident and important to have regulations governing gambling. Although the regulations can’t dictate on all the gambling processes, they can at least put measures that ensure that the gambler is not exploited. As a result, even if the gambler is addicted, there is a point the bookmaker can determine that enough is enough for the gambler to call it quits. This may not go down well with some gamblers especially when they think that their luck is around the corner. It also is not working well with some bookmakers as they make money by hooking gamblers to their bookmakers.
Many gamblers are men and young people. As a result, the society risks losing it by having the young and energetic people of the future fully immersed in the gambling problem. Men in most societies are assumed to be the bread winners and custodians of discipline. However, with the emerging trends where men are the one found in the gambling shops, women are slowly being left with the task of ensuring the family is taken care of financially and morally which is weighing on them. Such problems are the ones that prompted the government to try and come up with new regulations regulating the way the gambling issue is tackled. Gambling if not carefully looked into is a source of financial mess.
The current economic crises do not make the situation even better. Most of the gambling population is that which is jobless. The government is regulating the gambling problem by not issuing licenses to bookmakers in areas near soft loan spots or areas that have homeless people. Also, areas near learning institutions are discouraged as students are some of the people that might easily fall prey to gambling. Many homeless shelters house many gambling addicts. These addicts are so obsessed with gambling that they will pawn anything to get the money hoping to multiply it. On a lucky day, they might hit a jackpot but as the saying goes “the house always wins”.
The issues of bookmakers setting shops near gambling addict’s anonymous spot are also one of the reasons why gambling regulations have been put into place. Many gambling addicts and recovering addicts always assemble at this places to share experiences in a bid to change their lives but the availability of a bookmaker in the areas in always a hindrance to many. As a result, the government is working towards eliminating this problem. What the government is doing is commendable because some of the problems are at least being addressed.
